On Your Mark, Get Set... Read!

It may still be cold where you are, but it’s time to get ready for summer reading!

According to the American Library Association, summer reading programs began in the 1890s as a way to encourage school children to read during their summer vacation, use the library and develop the habit of reading. The whole family can benefit by participating in these programs, and the libraries benefit by attracting new readers, raising their profiles in the community, and building book circulation.

The Collaborative Summer Library Program, established in 1987, is a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality summer reading program materials for children, teens, and adults at public libraries across the country.  The goals of this program are to help young children build reading and language skills, to motivate teens to read and discuss literature, and to encourage adults to experience the joy of reading.  You can find more information about the program here: http://www.cslpreads.org/.

This year’s program is centered on sports and fitness.   The major theme for kids is On Your Mark, Get Set... Read! The slogan for teens is Get In the Game, and for adults, it’s Exercise Your Mind.  Books cover topics including sports, fitness, games, and recreation.  For the youngest children, concept books teach early reading skills.  Adults can exercise their minds with some of the most popular and important fiction titles available. Brodart’s special summer reading lists in Bibz provide a wide selection of popular materials related to these themes for every age group.  They include the newest titles and some older favorites.  There are fiction and nonfiction titles, biographies, easy readers, picture books, board books, graphic novels and even a special list for Spanish speaking patrons.
